U15 Home v Abingdon Vale, Monday 5th May

Result, Kennington won by 25 runs.

Another victory won by a great all round team effort. Winning the toss, Kennington batted first but the second ball saw Andy Russell bowled by a ball that barely left the ground. Ben Andre (13) and Paul Tyrer (20) rescued the situation with steady batting in the face of accurate bowling from the Abingdon openers. When Paul Tyer was caught with the score on 32, it was left to Josh Haynes to accelerate the scoring rate hitting their off spinner for two successive sixes. Particularly impressive was the way these early Kennington batsmen used their feet to the slow bowlers, but it was another “grubber” that trapped Ben Andre leg before. The scoring rate was slowed, and wickets fell, due to the impressive slow bowling of Abingdon skipper Harris who took 3 for 8 in his four overs, the brakes were also applied by the steady bowling of Sam. Moore. (Why wasn’t she allowed to bowl her full four overs?) The score was taken to a total of 103 by some thoughtful batting, and good running between the wickets, by Chris Green (17no) and Johnty Cook (9no).
In the increasingly chilly conditions the loyal band of supporters, huddled and shivering on the boundary, saw opening bowler Josh Haynes rip through the heart of Abingdon’s batting order delivering a mortal blow from which they never recovered. From 4 for 11, the Abingdon batsmen staged a recovery but they could not score quickly enough. Excellent fielding from the whole team, and particularly Adam Flint, coupled with more accurate swing bowling from Jack Spencer-Matthews, frustrated the efforts of the batsmen to hit out. Harminder Bhella’s nagging off spin earned praise from the visiting umpire and although these two bowlers did not take a wicket, their eight overs cost only 28 runs. Jack Kovandeich and Josh Ramsey bowled four overs between them for a mere 14 runs, and by the time Chris Green came on for the last over, the Abingdon cause was lost.
