Despite the damp, inclement weather this was a fantastic match that could not have been more keenly contested; the finish could not have been closer. Cumnor batted first but were soon feeling the pace of Sam Robins who removed their danger man for 6. J. Lee, 44 not out, took on the bowling and guided the away side to 96 for 3. The bowling was tight, but once again it was H. Pickford who won the "meanest bowler of the day" award conceding only 8 runs from his 4 overs. It stopped raining during the change of innings, but it got even darker. Metcalfe, bowling very quickly down the hill, took advantage of this and had the batsmen jumping around, but not as much as the wicketkeeper, who was forced to concede many byes. (Metcalfe willingly accepted that for his fouth over, late in the innings, he had to keep the ball well pitched up.) Joe Carrick and Michael Shortis seemed to be taking the game away from Cumnor, but Duplessis, the pick of the their bowlers, took 4 quick wickets. In the face of good bowling and keen fielding, Kennington struggled from then on. As the last over started 8 runs were needed, with one ball left, Kennington were still 4 runs short. Feilders patrolled the boundary, Jack Spencer-Matthews charged the bowler who reacted with a faster, wide delivery that beat the batsman and the wicketkepper and shot to the boundary. Kennington had won and the crowd went mad! Once again, a decent wicketkepper made all the difference. Cumnor gave away 19 byes and Kennington only 1. Well done to all concerned and thanks to all parents for their support. Particular thanks to Mr Robins who furnished the umpires with hot tea at the change of innings.
