At last, good weather! But not such a good result.
Kennington bowled well limiting Downs to 94 after they had got off to positive start. There was typically mean bowling from Pickford, but this time he was rivalled by Chilvers and Shortis. Fielding was as keen as ever, but two sharp run outs, especially the direct hit by Spencer-Matthews, demonstrated how valuable good work in the field can be.
Set 95 to win on a bowler friendly pitch was not going to be easy, especially when there was a careless run out in the first over. Wickets fell steadily and our batsman found great difficulty in piecing a well set field. By the time their legspinner came onto bowl, Kennington were well behind the clock. This week, the opposition had a wicketkeeper as good as our own; he conceded only 2 byes and got 4 stumpings as a race for quick runs exposed an inexperience against good slow bowling! Kennington were all out for 61; beaten by a good side that bowled particularly well. Oxford Downs, unbeaten in this section, go on to the next round.
